As a doctor and a father, I recognize the importance of regular participation in sport for the promotion of physical and mental health from a young age. Not only do they learn the actual physical technique of the sport and develop physically, they also acquire important qualities such as self-confidence, self-discipline, restraint, emotional stability, leadership, perseverance and social skills. These form the vital building blocks to a well-balanced individual who can contribute greatly to our society. With advancing telecommunication technology and easy access to information via with the Internet, children of the present age are vulnerable and may fall prey to vices such as pornography, violence, prostitution and gambling. We as parents have a responsibility to protect our children from these bad influences and ensure their healthy emotional and physical development. Through sports such as Taekwondo, we equip our children with values that keep them on the right path in life. From personal experience, I have seen how my son Christopher has benefited. He has transformed from a timid and oversensitive child to a confident and sensible young man with a healthy social network. It is by these qualities that he will excel academically and emotionally.
